Active Harmonic Filters for Data Centers

Active Harmonic Filters (AHF) are power-quality solutions designed to reduce harmonic distortion generated by nonlinear electrical loads in data centers and other critical facilities.

Modern data centers contain a high concentration of nonlinear loads, including Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) systems, Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs), switched-mode power supplies, IT equipment, and other power-electronic devices. These loads can introduce harmonic currents into the electrical distribution system.

Excessive harmonic distortion can increase electrical losses and heating in cables, transformers, neutral conductors, switchgear, and other components. It may also affect the performance and reliability of sensitive electrical equipment when harmonic levels exceed acceptable system limits.

An Active Harmonic Filter continuously monitors the electrical system and dynamically injects compensating currents to counteract selected harmonic components. This helps reduce current harmonic distortion and improve overall power quality.

Depending on the selected equipment and system design, Active Harmonic Filters may also provide reactive power compensation and help improve power factor. The required functions and filter capacity are determined according to the characteristics of the electrical network and connected loads.

Proper selection of an AHF should be based on electrical measurements, load profiles, harmonic spectrum, system configuration, transformer characteristics, and the required level of harmonic mitigation.

Particular attention should be given to Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) and the harmonic spectrum at relevant points within the electrical distribution system. Measurements and power-quality studies can be used to determine the appropriate mitigation strategy.

Active Harmonic Filters can be coordinated with UPS systems, Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs), transformers, generators, capacitor banks, switchgear, and other components of the data center electrical infrastructure.

It is important to distinguish harmonic filtering from voltage regulation and surge protection. An Active Harmonic Filter is primarily intended for harmonic mitigation and related power-quality functions. Voltage stabilizers and Surge Protection Devices (SPD) perform different functions within the electrical system.
