Central Battery Systems (CBS) for Data Centers
A Central Battery System (CBS) provides a centralized source of backup power for emergency lighting and illuminated exit signs when the normal electrical supply is interrupted.
In data centers and other critical facilities, emergency lighting is an important part of the life-safety infrastructure. It supports safe evacuation by maintaining the required emergency illumination along escape routes, exits, technical areas, and other designated locations during a loss of normal power.
Unlike individual self-contained emergency luminaires with local batteries, a Central Battery System uses a centralized battery and control arrangement to supply multiple emergency lighting circuits from a common system.
The CBS capacity is selected according to the connected emergency lighting load, required backup duration, system voltage, battery characteristics, circuit configuration, environmental conditions, and the approved project requirements.
Central Battery Systems may support maintained, non-maintained, or switched emergency lighting configurations depending on the selected equipment, emergency lighting design, and project requirements.
The system can incorporate automatic monitoring and testing functions to supervise the condition of the central unit, batteries, chargers, circuits, and connected emergency lighting equipment where supported by the selected solution.
Automatic functional and duration testing may also be provided where required, helping facility teams monitor emergency lighting system status and identify faults requiring inspection or maintenance.
System alarms and operating status can be displayed locally and, where supported, communicated to a Building Management System (BMS) or another compatible centralized monitoring platform.
The Central Battery System should be coordinated with emergency lighting distribution boards, final circuits, cable routes, fire alarm requirements, escape routes, exit signs, electrical protection, and other relevant life-safety systems according to the approved project design.
Battery location and installation conditions should also be considered during design. Appropriate ventilation, operating temperature, accessibility, electrical protection, maintenance clearances, and manufacturer requirements should be incorporated into the installation.
It is important to distinguish a Central Battery System from a data center UPS system. A CBS is primarily intended to support emergency lighting and associated life-safety lighting loads, while an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) is used to support critical IT and electrical loads according to the data center power architecture.
